I have to admit, I have been super excited to share with you guys how my craft room came together. It is my little slice of heaven and I spent an awfully long time designing it just how I wanted it to look. Even now, there are changes I would make, like having a bigger room or being able to afford a customised storage solution for all my crafting goodies.
Now, before I go any further, I want to make it clear that I know how incredibly lucky I am to have the room that I have with all the fun stuff in it and that this is not achievable for everyone. But what is very possible, is to have the same enjoyment with the crafts that you choose to engage in and with the resources that you can afford.
Many of the supplies and furniture pieces that I will be talking about, I have sourced second-hand and others have been presents from my lovely family. I will try and provide links at the end of this post to where you can purchase these items online but remember, new is not always best so do your homework and get yourself a good deal!
I think a good place for me to begin would be with the larger pieces of furniture. My main workspace is a long white table with a pull-out extra piece. It can be found on Ikea for £90 but I managed to purchase it second-hand for around £20-£30 (I cannot quite remember but it was significantly cheaper than buying new and was still in such great condition). This desk is a great size for the room I have it in and gives me plenty of space for my crafting. The pull-out panel is also very useful for giving extra room to spread out my things.
To go along with this, I have a white swivel chair also from Ikea at a cost of £22 but that was included with the cost of the desk. It is not the most comfortable of chairs but it means I refrain from spending too many hours without moving from my craft room, so I guess there is an upside. To make it slightly more bearable I normally sit with a cushion behind my back but definitely in the future I would look for a chair with better support.
The other piece of furniture in the room is a white cube-shaped storage unit, again from Ikea and costing £25. I actually purchased this new as I had already been gifted one from my dad and loved it so much that I just had to have one for my craft room. I use it for storing the many ring binders that I have along with other random bits and pieces. I have to be honest, I probably do not use it to its potential so that is something I can change when I next reorganise the room.
The next important feature of the room is my pegboard which I use to organise all the little accessories and crafting things that I have accumulated over time. You will have noticed a theme here, as this is also an Ikea purchase that set me back £12 plus all of the additional extras. I got the idea after watching people online show how they had used pegboards of various sizes and styles to store their craft supplies and set about finding one of my own.
I am quite fond of my Ikea one as they also provide the correct fitting attachments and at a reasonable price too. These include, storage tubs, drawers, bags, a book holder and little hooks that you can hang your tools on. Prices range from £1.50 to £6 for these and you can customise the pegboard to whatever works for you and your craft.
On the desk itself, I have various file folders in which I store packs of coloured & patterned cardstock and my die cut decoupage sheets. I also have many pots and cups for storing my large collection of pens & pencils. My sister gave me an old acrylic stand that she had been using for her makeup but had outgrown it. I use it for keeping all the little bits and pieces together that do not have anywhere else to go, like my stapler, binder clips and emergency bar of chocolate! I cannot find the exact one online as they come in many variations depending on what you are going to be storing but it will give you an idea as to what is out there. The prices on Amazon vary from £10 to £30 and upwards but you can probably find a cheaper option if you shop around or maybe even have a kind sister who will give you one for free!
I feel like I have rambled on a lot now and I have not even got into the actual craft supplies so I will leave that for another post. For now, I hope to have inspired some creative workspaces to come to life with (for the most part) affordable storage solutions and a bit of outside-the-box thinking.
Remember to leave your comments and suggestions over on my Instagram page and tag me in your posts so I can check them out. I would love to see where you guys do your crafting and how you store your goodies!
