So for this post, I wanted to do something a bit different. Having dabbled a little in psychology at college and university, I found the area of personality types to be rather interesting and certainly very varied, not forgetting controversial. This is especially the case when it comes to personality testing as many of them are self-report questionnaires, meaning that the person who is being tested has to answer the questions about themselves, which can result in distorted responses.
Of course this is not always the case and some people are truly honest when completing these tests but it does mean that results are not always reliable. This only really matters in some settings though, such as for research purposes or psychological testing for mental health conditions, but on many occasions they are simply used for fun.
Over the years, I have taken many a "personality test" online, just to see what my results would be and, on the whole, I feel like the descriptions it gives are a pretty good match to how I see myself. But how accurate are they really? I mean, answer a few [sometimes a lot!] of questions and somehow these websites can tell you all about yourself, from the type of career you should be in to who your perfect soulmate is?
As long as you keep in mind that you cannot really base major life decisions on the results of these tests and try not to be offended in any way by the information being given, then they can be a good way to pass the time and an interesting point of discussion with your family and friends.
Another point I would like to raise it that there are so many different types of personality test out there on the world wide web and they all use different measures and scoring systems, even if they appear to be based on the same psychological theory. This again, contributes to varying results and is something to keep in mind.
For the purposes of this blog, I have chosen to take the Jung Typology Test which the website [http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp] states is based on Carl Jung's and Isabel Briggs Myers' personality type theory. Basically, you have a questionnaire with 64 statements to answer with your 5 options being: **YES yes uncertain no NO** (very scientific!) and then you are given your score. This is in the form of a 4-letter type formula and the percentage of each letter to which you correspond. The test does not take too long to complete, unlike other ones which I have taken in the past and you have the results instantly.
Now for the fun part: my results!
So my 4-letter formula is INFJ, what does this mean? Well the website goes on to explain in more detail about key aspects of people with this personality type such as being 'strongly humanitarian in outlook' with a 'preference for closure and completion'. It then looks at suitable career choices for INFJ types, suggesting that they are 'effective in occupations involving substantial intellectual work, caring for other people, and those that require creativity'. I found this to be very interesting as I actually work full-time as a healthcare assistant in a care home for the elderly whilst having my website & blog on the side. This seems to be appropriate as it combines two points where I should be almost excelling.
There is plenty of information on the internet about all of the personality types, so once you have your 4 letters you can read lots and lots about it. I had a lot of fun taking this test and being able to see the comparisons with how I already view my own personality. Of course, there are points that I do not agree with and that is simply the nature of personality testing.
I hope you have found this post different but enjoyable. If you have any comments or suggestions for future posts, then please leave them over on my Instagram and don't forget to tag me in your posts. I look forward to seeing what personality types you guys are!
